PITTSBURGH, PA, UNITED STATES - Sep 16, 2019 - ERT, a global data and technology company that minimizes uncertainty and risk in clinical trials, today announced its sponsorship of the 2019 Simon’s Heart “Protect This Heart” student fall screening program. 

Simon’s Heart is a Philadelphia-based non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the warning signs and conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in children. ERT is the title sponsor of the organization’s upcoming youth screenings, in which thousands of children and adolescents are screened for heart abnormalities. The screenings will be held on September 21 at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA and on October 19 at William Tennent High School in Warminster, PA. In addition to sponsoring the fall youth screenings, ERT has donated the ECG machines used at every Protect This Heart screening since 2014. ERT scientists and expert over-read analysts donate countless time every year analyzing ECG readings and uploading the vast data collected for the advancement of life-saving research across the United States.

Simon’s Heart, formerly known as Simon’s Fund, is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to raising

awareness about the warning signs and conditions that lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death in children. Darren and Phyllis Sudman founded Simon’s Fund in 2005 in memory of their three-month old son, Simon.  He died suddenly while taking a nap from an undetected heart condition. 

Simon’s Heart has provided free heart screenings to 17,929 students. Of those tested, 137 discovered heart conditions.  It was behind the passage of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act in Pennsylvania, the first law in the country to protect student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest. This law has been passed in eleven other states as well. It created HeartBytes, the first-of-its-kind digital cardiac registry of seemingly healthy kids. The data and images are made available to qualified researchers, free of charge. It operates GotAED.org, a crowd-funding site dedicated to getting AED devices into places where kids learn and play, and has distributed 90+ AEDs. It has partnered on awareness campaigns with most of the NCAA and professional sporting teams in Philadelphia.

In 2014, Phyllis Sudman was named the 2014 Woman of Worth National Honoree by L’Oréal Paris, beating out more than 4,300 other women.
