Alfa Chemistry Launches MOF Chemicals for the Science Community

Jan 27, 2021, 14:55 PM by

As the fastest growing class of materials in chemistry today, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have become ideal candidates for storage of fuels (hydrogen and methane), capture of carbon dioxide, and catalysis applications as well as many other applications. To meet the increasing market demand accompanying this trend, Alfa Chemistry has recently launched a subsidiary website, which is specially designed for supplying MOF chemicals, COFs linkers, and MOF materials.

MOFs are made by linking inorganic and organic units by strong bonds through reticular synthesis. Due to the flexibility and variation of the constituents’ geometry, size, and functionality, there have been more than 20,000 different MOFs reported and studied since the discovery of the first MOF structure in the 1990s. And the number still grows daily.

“Up till now, MOFs with permanent porosity are more extensive in their variety and multiplicity than any other class of porous materials,” says a senior scientist from Alfa Chemistry. “Meanwhile, the application of MOFs is diverse. First, to exploit MOFs' cage-like structure, they are used in gas storage and separation, liquid separation and purification, electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and sensing. Apart from that, MOFs have also been used as unique precursors for the construction of inorganic functional materials with unparalleled design possibilities, such as carbons, metal-based compounds, and their composites.”

In contrast with single materials, MOF composites show greater specific surface area and porosity, stability, and catalytic performance. Careful selection of MOF constituents can yield crystals of ultra-high porosity and high thermal and chemical stability. MOFs or their composites can be formed by different synthesis methods. Through deprotonation regulation, coordination modulation, and surfactant modulation synthesis, the morphology and size of MOF crystals can be modulated.
