Optical Brighteners, Plasticizers, and Antioxidants as Polymer Stabilizers

Mar 13, 2023, 11:17 AM by

The plastic industry is evolving rapidly, and polymer stabilizers are applied to prevent polymer degradation during manufacturing or usage. Alfa Chemistry, one of the leading suppliers of chemicals covering materials for plastics research, recently released three new polymer stabilizers, i.e., optical brighteners, plasticizers, and antioxidants, for researchers worldwide.

“Because the plastic degradation process is complicated, we need to eradicate multiple degradation factors to manipulate a prominent stabilizing effect. It is evident that eliminating only one factor is insufficient,” said the Marketing Chief of Alfa Chemistry. “After tremendous efforts being made, our scientific team has developed a series of polymer stabilizers, aiming to prevent the formation of as many degradation factors as possible.”

Optical Brightener

Optical brighteners, also called fluorescent whitening agents, can absorb UV light and emit visible light. Therefore, these materials are extensively used in the textile industry, detergents, papers, and synthetics & plastics. Some optical brighteners provided by Alfa Chemistry are: Fluorescent brightener 368 (CAS 117313-08-3), 1,4-Bis(2-cyanostyryl)benzene (CAS 13001-39-3), 2,5-Thiophenediylbis(5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzoxazole (CAS 7124-58-6), Disodium 4,4'-bis(2-sulfonatostyryl)biphenyl (CAS 27344-41-8), 1,4-Bis(2-benzoxazolyl)naphthalene (CAS 5089-22-5), 5-Methyl-2-[(E)-2-(5-methyl-1,3-benzoxazol-2-yl)ethenyl]-1,3-benzoxazole (CAS 12224-12-3), 1-(2-Cyanostyryl)-4-(4-cyanostyryl)benzene (CAS 13001-38-2), and Fluorescent brightener OB-2 (CAS 2397-00-4).

Plasticizer

When added to a material, plasticizers can introduce properties such as softness and flexibility so as to increase plasticity and decrease viscosity. Hence, plasticizers are often used in the production of plastics and packaging, such as epoxy resins, water pipe linings, thermal printing papers, implanted medical devices, etc. Phthalate esters, aliphatic dibasic acid esters, benzoate esters, trimellitate esters, polyesters, citrates, and bio-based plasticizers are the most commonly seen chemical families of plasticizers used for polymer modification. Alfa Chemistry’s offering of plasticizers covers: Dioctyl adipate (CAS 123-79-5), Triphenyl phosphate (CAS 115-86-6), Butyl stearate (CAS 123-95-5), Epoxidized linseed oil (CAS 8016-11-3), Di-n-octyl phthalate (CAS 117-84-0), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) azelate (CAS 103-24-2), Triacetin (CAS 102-76-1), Dioctyl terephthalate (6422-86-2), 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (CAS 1241-94-7), Dihexyl phthalate (CAS 84-75-3), and more.

Antioxidant

Oxidative degradation of polymers can occur during manufacturing, processing, or during service usage when exposed to light or heat. Based on their reaction mechanisms, antioxidants can be divided into two groups, namely, primary antioxidants and secondary antioxidants. Some of the popular antioxidants at Alfa Chemistry are listed here: Isodecyl diphenyl phosphite (CAS 26544-23-0), Acetone diphenylamine (CAS 68412-48-6), Poly(dicyclopentadiene-co-p-cresol) (CAS 68610-51-5), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (CAS 793-24-8), Tetraphenyl dipropyleneglycol diphosphite (CAS 80584-85-6), Octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate (CAS 2082-79-3), IRGAFOS P-EPQ (119345-01-6), 4,4'-Methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) (CAS 118-82-1), and Antioxidant HP136,2(3H)-benzofuranone,5,7-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(3,4-dimethylphenyl) (CAS 164391-52-0).
