Blood Test Distinguisheds Between Viral and Bacterial Infections

September 24, 2013 | Researchers at Duke Medicine developed a test that shows greater than 90% accuracy when distinguishing between viral and bacterial respiratory infections. Tested on 102 patients who arrived at the hospital’s emergency department presenting a fever, the assay correctly identified positives and ruled out negatives, providing faster diagnoses and treatment options while also reducing misidentified viral infections and unnecessary use of antibiotics.
