July 17, 2014 | A new report from the California Healthcare Foundation looks at gaps in the health data privacy and security protections contained in the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) when it comes to the activities of data brokers. The report finds that HIPAA does not prevent the tracking and sale of data like health-relevant Google searches, health-related purchases online and in retail locations, and use of social networks such as PatientsLikeMe.
