EMR Fault in U.S. Ebola Case?

October 6, 2014 | It has now been widely reported that an oversight in Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital's electronic medical record system contributed to the discharge without a diagnosis of the U.S. patient later diagnosed with the ebola virus. Specifically, while a nurse recorded that the patient had visited Liberia, this information did not appear on the physician's EMR interface. However, policy experts note that the EMR screen should not have been the only opportunity to learn about the patient's travel history, and that human error should equally be recognized in the decision to discharge this patient when a risk of ebola could have been made evident to the treating physician.
